Read more →Gazar is a lightweight silk fabric with a smooth, slightly lustrous surface and an unusually firm hand. Its double-yarn construction gives it enough body to hold sculptural shapes while remaining much lighter than many other structured fabrics. Unlike softer silks such as chiffon or charmeuse, gazar does not collapse easily against the body; it can maintain volume and create clean, architectural silhouettes. Gazar was developed in 1958 by the Swiss textile firm Abraham in collaboration with Cristóbal Balenciaga. Its ability to hold its shape made it particularly suited to Balenciaga's increasingly sculptural designs of the late 1950s and 1960s, allowing him to create volume through the inherent properties of the fabric rather than relying heavily on internal support.
