Mother of pearl is the common name for nacre, the iridescent inner layer of certain mollusc shells. Its characteristic lustre comes from the way light interacts with its microscopic layered structure. It is commonly used for jewellery, buttons and decorative details and is different from a pearl, which is a separate formation produced inside the mollusc.
