Notes on fabric

Chiffon is a very lightweight woven fabric with a fine, smooth surface and a sheer, airy appearance. It is soft and fluid, with very little body, so it falls easily and moves with the wearer rather than holding a defined shape. The surface is generally even and slightly translucent, with a delicate appearance that can make colours look softer through the fabric. Chiffon is often confused with georgette because both are lightweight and sheer. The main visual difference is the surface: chiffon is relatively smooth, while georgette has a noticeably grainier, pebbled texture. Chiffon is also softer and more fluid than organza, which is crisp and capable of holding volume. The fabric became particularly associated with eveningwear and lingerie during the twentieth century, as its transparency and fluidity made it useful for creating soft, layered silhouettes.
