What is GOTS?

Understanding what the Global Organic Textile Standard certifies, from organic fibres to textile processing.

May 12, 2025 · 8 min read

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard, an international standard for textiles made from certified organic fibres. It covers the textile supply chain from the processing of the raw fibre through to the finished product, setting requirements for environmental and social practices at each stage.

What does GOTS certify?

GOTS covers more than the origin of the fibre. To carry the GOTS label, a textile must meet defined requirements for organic fibre content, processing, dyes and chemicals, wastewater treatment and social criteria. The supply chain is inspected by independent certification bodies, allowing certified materials to be traced through the stages of production.

What does GOTS actually tell you?

A GOTS certification gives information about both the organic origin of the fibres and the way the textile has been processed and manufactured. It is therefore different from a certification that only verifies the presence of organic fibre. When you see GOTS on a bycomposition product, you can use it as an additional layer of information alongside the product's composition and fabric type.
